I agree with you about the writing of horror stories (not that I have ever written any but I enjoy reading them, at night, in my house all alone, and I am lying in bed reading this excellent horror story, all tensed up, when suddenly!!). The most horror comes out of the more everyday situations when suddenly something unexpected happens. And I hate overwriting too. And over-explaining.
