Russia just delivered 4 S-300s that (Russia says) can shoot down any Israeli plane that tries to bomb Syria. Quite a claim. The US says if Russia shoots down an Israeli plane it means war, and Russia said it does not have the resources or logistics to fight NATO for Idlib. So what happens now?

MichaelWmeAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7826101215822428783.post-7924858791378082822018-09-24T17:07:38.405+05:302018-09-24T17:07:38.405+05:30I do not think Russia gave any weapons to Syria. Today, Russia announced it will provide Syria with S-300 missiles (previously promised but not delivered after Israel protested). At least these missiles will have IFF, so it won't be possible for Putin to say it was a terrible error by the Syrians if another Russian plane is shot down. (Unless Israel convinces Russia to renege again, as it probably will.)

MichaelWmeAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7826101215822428783.post-26094442151490044432018-09-24T04:10:11.176+05:302018-09-24T04:10:11.176+05:30I've been watching the Russian propaganda chan...I've been watching the Russian propaganda channel, and they say the Israelis were shooting at Syria from the shadow of an unarmed Russian plane. The Syrians shot in the directions the missiles were coming from, and their elderly missiles took out the Israeli plane, since they were too old to have IFF. That version is plausible. Russia also complains that Israel promised to give Russia warning of air strikes, and they did. Less than one minute, and in about two minutes, the Russian plane had been destroyed.

Israel says the Israeli planes had destroyed their targets and were back in Israel when the incompetent Syrians shot down the Russian plane. That one is a pretty obvious lie.

Russia says it will not go against Turkey, which has claimed Northern Syria for the Ottoman Empire and sent its army to defend Idlib. Russia says it will not shoot down any Israeli plane or give Syria any weapons that could hit an Israeli plane. Nor will Russia shoot any US, UK, or French planes or give Syrian weapons that could do so.

Russia seems to be playing like Cuba did in the '70s in Africa--too small to take on the big boys like Turkey or Israel, just providing limited assistance to their old ally Syria.

MichaelWmeAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7826101215822428783.post-25091452056235142452018-09-22T18:26:29.551+05:302018-09-22T18:26:29.551+05:30Al Jazeera wrote that the USSR backed Egypt and th...Al Jazeera wrote that the USSR backed Egypt and the US backed Israel. With Soviet weapons, Egypt had about 3 days of success in '73, but they didn't defend their air defences, an Israeli squad came with explosives and destroyed it, and the Israeli Air Force gave Israeli armour close-air support, and the Israeli army almost reached Cairo and Damascus with little effective resistance. The USSR threatened, and the US went to Defcon 'We're ready to nuke you in 15 minutes if you don't back down,' and the USSR backed down. Completely. Back in '73.

After WWII, the USSR was exhausted, but Truman was running so far behind, most newspapers weren't bothering to cover the election, when he said, 'The USSR is a much greater threat than the Axis. We must keep our military mobilised and give our European allies money so they can fight.' The USSR quickly developed nukes, and their capability was greatly exaggerated by the US to justify major increases in the US military.

That was then. Now, the New York Times says all Putin's WMD for MAD are just Photoshop. Syria has only anti-aircraft systems from the '60s. Israel threatens that, if an Israeli plane bombing Syria is shot down, all Syria will be carpet bombed to oblivion, so Syria has very seldom shot at Israeli planes (only once that I can recall).

St Hillary promised regime change in Syria and Russia starting on Day 1, and the US press says it's a pity Trump and Putin managed to steal the election: Putin would have meekly backed down and let St Hillary name another pro-Democracy Yeltsin who'd dismantle the partly rebuilt Soviet military and defence industries. Russia, it turns out, is not ready for war against Turkey, they ceded Idlib to the Ottoman Empire with only a week or so of threats before complete capitulation. When Erdogan wants more of Syria, he knows he can take it. Putin seems certain that, if Russia shot down a single Israeli plane, the US would immediately order a nuclear strike on Russia. If Russia went to war with Turkey, all of NATO would come to support Turkey. So Putin seems to be playing a very weak hand, and everyone is sure he's holding less than a pair of 2s. And he's playing it very, very cautiously. He knows the US is ready for WWIII. Sorry, under US law, it's not a war unless the Congress votes to call it a war, so the US is ready for Worldwide Peace Keeping Exercise, and is sure it will have a quick and easy victory over Russia even if China supports Russia. And Putin doesn't see much he can do. It looks like Bill is right. It's time for some hissing by Russia.

MichaelWmeAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7826101215822428783.post-30468974155082600492018-09-21T00:37:10.419+05:302018-09-21T00:37:10.419+05:30Bill,

As much as I honestly fear WW3, I have to go with you and say it is time for Mr. Putin to quit, retire to his country home and enjoy his long deserved retirement.
JFK supposedly said the "those who make peaceful revolution impossible will make violent revolution inevitable".
Seems we are living in that old Chinese cures; may you live in interesting times. Well at nearly 71 years on this planet and with failing health, let them have their goddamn WW3. With a small bit of luck, I'll be long gone before it starts.Kronkats Kornerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15356981317059108859noreply@blogger.com
